Fabric honesty
Hoi An
"Cashmere" at $99 is not cashmere. Reputable shops label blends honestly and show mill books; street shops mislabel. Burn-test culture exists for a reason.
Sydney
Generally decent at reputable houses, but like most MTM markets the main risk is vague cloth provenance or marketing-heavy labels on lower-priced packages rather than outright fraud; buyers should verify mill, composition, and weight before paying.[1][12][18]
Turnaround & fittings
Hoi An
24–72h common; good workshops prefer 2–3 days with a second fitting. 1–3 fittings standard — the advantage of a walkable old town.
Sydney
Typical MTM turnaround is about 4–8 weeks, while serious bespoke can take longer depending on fitting rounds and cloth availability; walk-in package deals may promise shorter timelines but often with Fitting culture is appointment-driven and relatively professional in the CBD/inner suburbs, with multiple rounds common at serious houses and more limited hand-holding in budget/package deals.[1][4][1
Tout / scam pressure

Where each one wins — and doesn’t

Hoi An

500+ tailor shops in a walkable UNESCO old town — the densest tailoring cluster in Asia.

  • True half-canvas work from ~$150 — the lowest canvassed price point of any hub
  • 300-year tailoring tradition; 1–3 fittings within a walkable old town
  • Remote reorder culture: pattern on file, WhatsApp fittings, ships worldwide
  • Quality variance is extreme — the wrong shop fuses and mislabels fabric
  • Smaller luxury-fabric stock than Hong Kong (top mills by order, not on the shelf)
  • You need 2–3 days in town to do it properly

ScamsHotel/taxi commission referrals exist and inflate prices ~20–30%. No aggressive street touting like Bangkok, but "my cousin's shop" steering is real.

Sydney, NSW, Australia

The scene is concentrated in the CBD around George St, Pitt St, the Strand Arcade, and nearby inner suburbs like Paddington and Surry Hills, mixing office-worker MTM studios, bridal/wedding packages, and a smaller number of genuine bespoke houses.[1][5][6]

  • Broad range from accessible MTM to serious bespoke in a compact area.[1][5]
  • Strong cluster of real shops in the CBD makes comparison shopping easy.[1][6][10]
  • Several established names publish transparent starting prices and have active Sydney showrooms.[4][7][11]
  • Lower-priced offers can be heavily sales-driven and sometimes rely on minimal construction or inflated package framing.[1][15]
  • Fabric labels and cloth origin should be checked carefully at budget end of the market.[1][12]
  • True top-tier bespoke is available, but it is not cheap and usually requires multiple visits.[12][19]

ScamsScam risk is medium rather than high: the main issues are commission-driven touting, sale-pressure, and upselling in tourist-heavy areas rather than widespread outright scams.[1][5][15]

Being a short and stocky person, I could never truly get clothing that fitted properly. "Off the rack" was never an option... As I opened the small box, I got nervous and wondered if I made a big mistake and basically gambled away a fair amount of money. I ordered a 3 piece suit, 2 shirts and had a pair of leather dress shoes. Everything fitted nicely... the shirts were absolutely PERFECT.

WOW! Ordered a suit online with Linda. She contacted me by video call to go through the measuring process and once confirmed measurements again, around 4 weeks later a made to measure suit arrived in the UK. Fitted perfectly and I didn't even visit! Fantastic quality and customer service from Linda. Would definitely recommend!

Exceptional experience from start to finish. I ordered a fully custom two-piece double-breasted suit remotely from France, Linda and Jennifer guided me through every step with patience and professionalism. The suit arrived in under 3 weeks and the result is flawless: fabric, cut, lining, silhouette, everything is perfect. Nathan Tailors delivered exactly the vision I had in mind. I will absolutely be ordering again. Highly recommended.

This was my first time buying suits online so I was a bit apprehensive. However, the online order form was both easy to use and very thorough, and they did a video call with me to make sure of a couple of measurements that were out of the normal range. Two suits and a shirt arrived here in New Zealand in less than two weeks, are well-made, and fit perfectly. I'm thrilled with the service.

Hoi An vs Sydney, NSW, Australia — common questions

Is it cheaper to get a suit made in Hoi An or Sydney, NSW, Australia?

Hoi An is cheaper for genuinely well-made work: $150–$400 for half/full-canvas versus $800–$4,700 in Sydney, NSW, Australia. Workshop half-canvas from ~$150; big tourist storefronts charge more for less make. Quality varies enormously shop to shop — the town has 500+ tailors.

Hoi An or Sydney, NSW, Australia — where is the suit quality better?

Hoi An: half/full canvas if you ask the right shop — Mass-tourist shops fuse by default; established workshops cut genuine half-canvas at prices no other hub matches. Ask to see the canvas — good shops show you. Sydney, NSW, Australia: mixed market — fused common, canvas exists — Sydney is a mixed market: entry-level walk-in offers are often fused or lightly constructed package MTM, while established houses and higher-ticket ateliers can provide half-canvas or full-bespoke construction on request.[1][12][18]

Where are tailor scams worse, Hoi An or Sydney, NSW, Australia?

Hoi An carries more pressure: Hotel/taxi commission referrals exist and inflate prices ~20–30%. No aggressive street touting like Bangkok, but "my cousin's shop" steering is real. By contrast, Sydney, NSW, Australia: Scam risk is medium rather than high: the main issues are commission-driven touting, sale-pressure, and upselling in tourist-heavy areas rather than widespread outright scams.[1][5][15]

Can I reorder from Hoi An or Sydney, NSW, Australia after I fly home?

Hoi An: The established workshops keep your pattern and reorder/remake remotely over WhatsApp with worldwide shipping — Hoi An pioneered this among Asian tailoring towns. Sydney, NSW, Australia: Remote reorder is available only in a patchy sense: some chains and traveling clothiers can keep measurements on file, but Sydney’s scene is primarily in-person fitting based rather than remote-first.[1][8][12] If remote reordering matters, that difference usually decides the whole question — your second and third suits cost no flights.

So which should I choose, Hoi An or Sydney, NSW, Australia?

On trustworthy construction per dollar, Hoi An scores 89/100. The best canvas-quality-per-dollar in Asia, multi-fitting culture, and the only hub where remote reordering after you leave is normal. Sydney, NSW, Australia is the right call when: Business travelers or wedding shoppers who want a strong Sydney CBD/inner-city selection with real made-to-measure and bespoke options, plus enough competition to compare fit, cloth, and price in one trip.[1][5][13]
