Are Hockerty suits half canvas or full canvas?

On Hockerty's Premium Suit you choose: the page's own FAQ says "Select from half-canvas or full-canvas construction" 2. Premium starts at $349 and the main suits listing from $399 as of September 2026, but the listing says nothing about canvas, and Hockerty does not publish what the base suit gets or what full canvas costs extra 23. Hockerty's blog defines fused as "an interlining glued to the fabric" but never says whether any Hockerty suit is built that way 1.

What Hockerty says

  • Premium Suit FAQ: "Select from half-canvas or full-canvas construction. Full-canvas suits mold to your body over time, offering superior drape and a sophisticated silhouette."2
  • Premium Suit fabrics: "Choose from our collection of Super 150s, 180s, and 200s wool, cashmere blends, and exclusive Italian and British mills." No individual mill is named.2
  • Prices: Premium Suit from $349 on the US page; the main US suits listing starts at $399 and says nothing about canvas.23
  • Hockerty's blog defines all three constructions. Full canvas "starts at the chest area of the jacket (including the lapel) and flows throughout the jacket to the hem." Half canvas "starts at the shoulders but only reaches halfway through the jacket." Fused: "A fused canvas suit simply has an interlining glued to the fabric of the suit instead of sewn canvas." The page does not say which construction Hockerty itself uses.1
  • No dollar upcharge for full canvas is published; the price delta sits behind the interactive configurator.23

How to tell in the store (and what the pinch test cannot prove)

  • The standard instruction: pinch the sleeve first for a baseline, because sleeves are never canvassed, then pinch the cloth below the lowest buttonhole and pull the layers apart. Three layers means a canvas is floating inside; two layers means fused.56
  • The catch most brand pages leave out: on a half-canvassed jacket the front below the second button is fused anyway, so a low pinch on a half-canvas jacket feels exactly like a fused one. The definitive statement of this is a 2012 Put This On piece; no newer primary write-up of the limitation was found, and current how-to pages repeat the test without the caveat.4
  • Every jacket, fused, half-canvas or full-canvas, has a floating chest piece, so feeling a distinct layer at the chest proves nothing.4
  • Net result: a low pinch that finds a floating third layer proves full canvas; a low pinch that finds nothing means fused or half-canvas, and the test cannot separate those two. Salespeople who can make the call are, in the same source's words, "very, very hard to find". The only reliable route is the brand's own published statement, which is why this page separates what the brand says from what buyers report.45
  • Hand-feel is weaker evidence than it used to be: fusing "has gotten a lot better nowadays and is not always as stiff", which makes construction harder to judge by touch.6
  • Working sleeve buttons are not a construction signal. They now appear from Savile Row down to budget high-street retailers, and once the buttonholes are cut, sleeve-length alterations get harder.7

Ordered two suits and four shirts, remotely from the US. They fit great and are great quality! Was able to do everything over WhatsApp for measurements, etc. Will definitely visit if I ever make it to Hoi An. Highly recommend!

Being a short and stocky person, I could never truly get clothing that fitted properly. "Off the rack" was never an option... As I opened the small box, I got nervous and wondered if I made a big mistake and basically gambled away a fair amount of money. I ordered a 3 piece suit, 2 shirts and had a pair of leather dress shoes. Everything fitted nicely... the shirts were absolutely PERFECT.

She contacted me by video call to go through the measuring process and once confirmed measurements again, around 4 weeks later a made to measure suit arrived in the UK. Fitted perfectly and I didn't even visit! Fantastic quality and customer service from Linda. Would definitely recommend!

Exceptional experience from start to finish. I ordered a fully custom two-piece double-breasted suit remotely from France, Linda and Jennifer guided me through every step with patience and professionalism. The suit arrived in under 3 weeks and the result is flawless: fabric, cut, lining, silhouette, everything is perfect. Nathan Tailors delivered exactly the vision I had in mind. I will absolutely be ordering again. Highly recommended.

This was my first time buying suits online so I was a bit apprehensive. However, the online order form was both easy to use and very thorough, and they did a video call with me to make sure of a couple of measurements that were out of the normal range. Two suits and a shirt arrived here in New Zealand in less than two weeks, are well-made, and fit perfectly. I'm thrilled with the service.
