Semi-Formal Attire for Men, Decoded

Also written as: semiformal · after-five

The short answer

A suit, always — just not the tuxedo: dark in the evening, lighter by day, tie strongly advised.

Last checked against the leading guides 2026-09-26.

Where it sits on the formality scale

Most → least formal, left to right. Semi-Formal sits at 6/10.

What the host actually means

Semi-formal is the code that means "definitely a suit, definitely not black tie." Time of day steers the shade: mid-tones for daytime (grey, mid-blue), darker after six. It is the most forgiving named code — nearly impossible to overdress short of a tuxedo, easy to underdress by skipping the jacket or tie.

The exact spec

The suit

Daytime: mid-grey, mid-blue, or muted patterns. Evening: navy, charcoal, deep tones. Two-piece is standard; a blazer with wool dress trousers passes only at a daytime event that is not a wedding.

Shirt

White or pale; crisp beats fancy.

Neckwear

A tie is the safe reading; skippable only at visibly relaxed daytime events.

Shoes

Oxfords, derbies or polished loafers; brown by day, darker by night.

Accessories

Pocket square, matching leathers; restraint elsewhere.

Never

Blazer-and-chino combinations (that's dressy casual), sneakers, tuxedos (that's the ceiling breached).

The classic mistakes

  • Treating it as jacket-optional — the suit IS the code.
  • Wearing evening darkness to an 11am garden ceremony; semi-formal follows the sun.
  • Over-reaching into a dinner jacket — the "semi" excludes it.

By time of day and season

Daytime, spring or summer

Suit
Light-to-mid grey, mid-blue, tan or stone. Linen blend or lightweight wool; a half-lined jacket in real heat.
Shirt, tie
White or pale blue. Tie optional at a relaxed garden ceremony; a knit or light silk tie if you wear one.
Shoes
Brown or tan leather: loafers, derbies, suede is fine.

Daytime, autumn or winter

Suit
Mid-grey, navy, or texture: flannel, tweed, brown or olive tones.
Shirt, tie
White or pale blue. Tie advised.
Shoes
Dark-brown oxfords or derbies.

Evening (after 6 pm), any season

Suit
Navy, charcoal or midnight. Plain or the quietest pattern.
Shirt, tie
White shirt, tie expected.
Shoes
Black or dark-brown oxfords, polished.

Outdoor or hot-climate wedding

Suit
Linen blend in a lighter shade, jacket half-lined or unlined. It is still a matching suit.
Shirt, tie
Breathable white or pale shirt. Tie optional by day, but bring one.
Shoes
Leather loafers. Not sandals, not canvas.

Four outfits that are correct

The one that always works

Any semi-formal wedding, day or evening

  • Navy two-piece suit
  • White shirt, semi-spread collar
  • Burgundy or navy silk tie
  • Dark-brown oxfords, matching belt
  • White pocket square

Summer daytime

Garden, vineyard or beach-adjacent ceremony before 6 pm

  • Light-grey or stone linen-blend suit
  • Pale-blue shirt
  • Knit tie, or no tie if the ceremony is visibly relaxed
  • Brown suede loafers

Autumn evening

Indoor reception, October to February

  • Charcoal suit; a matching waistcoat makes it a three-piece
  • White shirt
  • Dark-green or burgundy tie
  • Black oxfords

Separates, done right

Daytime semi-formal that is NOT a wedding: a lunch, an awards event, a christening

  • Navy blazer
  • Mid-grey wool dress trousers (not chinos)
  • White or pale-blue shirt; tie optional
  • Brown leather loafers or derbies

Why the guides disagree

Read three guides and you get three answers on two questions: does semi-formal need a matching suit, and does it need a tie. They are not wrong so much as describing different events.

The Emily Post Institute

“More formal than what you would wear to an office, but slightly less formal than what you would wear to a formal event.” After 6 pm, “err on the side of formality.” No garment list.

State & Liberty

“A blazer with matching dress pants or a 2-piece suit”. A blazer with matching trousers is a suit, so this is a suit either way. By day the tie is “optional (but always acceptable)”; in the evening a dark navy suit and tie.

Hockerty (updated 11 Sep 2026)

“Suit or blazer + tailored trousers + tie.” Jeans: “generally, the answer … is NO.”

Google’s AI Overview

A suit or a smart blazer with dress trousers; tie optional, recommended for weddings and evening.

Our reading

Where they agree is the part that matters: nobody says chinos, jeans or no jacket, and everybody gets more formal after 6 pm. The split on separates comes from mixing wedding advice with general-event advice. Our reading: at a wedding, or any time after 6 pm, wear a matching suit and a tie. At a daytime event that is not a wedding, a blazer with wool dress trousers passes and the tie is optional.

Semi-formal for women, in a tailored suit

A well-cut trouser suit is correct at every semi-formal wedding. Evening: navy, black, deep green or burgundy. Daytime: lighter greys, soft blues, stone. A silk blouse or fine knit underneath, and heels or polished loafers.

The same rules on fit apply, and they matter more on a suit than on anything else you could wear: the shoulders and the trouser length are what people notice.

Our women's tailored suits are cut from the same cloth library as the men's, at the same $149–$309, from a dedicated 15-measurement women's flow.

“Being a short and stocky person, I could never truly get clothing that fitted properly. "Off the rack" was never an option... As I opened the small box, I got nervous and wondered if I made a big mistake and basically gambled away a fair amount of money. I ordered a 3 piece suit, 2 shirts and had a pair of leather dress shoes. Everything fitted nicely... the shirts were absolutely PERFECT.”

“This was my first time buying suits online so I was a bit apprehensive. However, the online order form was both easy to use and very thorough, and they did a video call with me to make sure of a couple of measurements that were out of the normal range. Two suits and a shirt arrived here in New Zealand in less than two weeks, are well-made, and fit perfectly. I'm thrilled with the service.”

Semi-Formal: the questions everyone asks

Is semi-formal the same as cocktail?

For men, functionally yes — both mean a sharp suit. Semi-formal reads a touch more traditional; cocktail invites slightly more fashion. Either interpretation lands you correctly dressed at both.

Can I skip the tie at a semi-formal wedding?

Evening: keep it. Relaxed daytime: you may drop it if your collar and jacket are doing real work — but a tie in the pocket costs nothing.

What colour suit for a semi-formal summer wedding?

Mid-blue or light grey by day; see our destination guides for how the climate rewrites this — a tropical semi-formal is a different animal from a ballroom one.

Do you have to wear a suit to semi-formal?

At a wedding or anything after 6 pm, yes. At a daytime event that is not a wedding, a navy blazer with wool dress trousers is accepted by most guides.

Are khakis OK for semi-formal?

No. Cotton chinos and khakis are business casual, one full step below. If you wear separates, the trousers should be wool dress trousers.

Can men wear jeans to a semi-formal event?

No. Every guide we checked agrees on this one, including dark denim with a blazer.

Is semi-formal the same as business casual?

No. Business casual allows chinos and no jacket; semi-formal starts at a full suit.

What should you not wear to a semi-formal wedding?

Jeans, chinos, polo shirts, short-sleeved shirts, sneakers, and at the other end a tuxedo. A black tuxedo is above the code and reads as trying to match the wedding party.
