The verdict

Hanoi is the better value for a well-made suit — 41/100 vs 22/100

Hanoi gets you a mixed market where fused is common at $200–$600, with hit-or-miss remote follow-up. Thailand runs $400–$900 for comparable make, with heavy tout and scam pressure. Thailand still wins where it wins: fastest turnaround culture in the world.

Where each one wins — and doesn’t

Thailand

Very high density in tourist zones nationwide; quality concentrated in a short Bangkok shortlist.

  • Fastest turnaround culture in the world
  • A few Bangkok houses with genuinely international reputations
  • Tourist infrastructure makes the logistics effortless
  • Highest scam/tout pressure of any tailoring destination
  • Fused package suits dominate the market
  • 2–3× Vietnamese prices for comparable canvas work

ScamsThailand's tailor-tout economy (tuk-tuk commissions, fake closing-down sales, "government export shop" routines) is the most institutionalised in Asia.

  • Vietnamese prices
  • Real silk trade heritage
  • Low-pressure compared with Bangkok

  • Tourist-strip quality variance
  • Limited remote follow-up

Ordered two suits and four shirts, remotely from the US. They fit great and are great quality! Was able to do everything over WhatsApp for measurements, etc. Will definitely visit if I ever make it to Hoi An. Highly recommend!

Being a short and stocky person, I could never truly get clothing that fitted properly. "Off the rack" was never an option... As I opened the small box, I got nervous and wondered if I made a big mistake and basically gambled away a fair amount of money. I ordered a 3 piece suit, 2 shirts and had a pair of leather dress shoes. Everything fitted nicely... the shirts were absolutely PERFECT.

WOW! Ordered a suit online with Linda. She contacted me by video call to go through the measuring process and once confirmed measurements again, around 4 weeks later a made to measure suit arrived in the UK. Fitted perfectly and I didn't even visit! Fantastic quality and customer service from Linda. Would definitely recommend!

Exceptional experience from start to finish. I ordered a fully custom two-piece double-breasted suit remotely from France, Linda and Jennifer guided me through every step with patience and professionalism. The suit arrived in under 3 weeks and the result is flawless: fabric, cut, lining, silhouette, everything is perfect. Nathan Tailors delivered exactly the vision I had in mind. I will absolutely be ordering again. Highly recommended.

This was my first time buying suits online so I was a bit apprehensive. However, the online order form was both easy to use and very thorough, and they did a video call with me to make sure of a couple of measurements that were out of the normal range. Two suits and a shirt arrived here in New Zealand in less than two weeks, are well-made, and fit perfectly. I'm thrilled with the service.

Thailand vs Hanoi — common questions

Is it cheaper to get a suit made in Thailand or Hanoi?

Hanoi is cheaper for genuinely well-made work: $200–$600 for half/full-canvas versus $400–$900 in Thailand. Old Quarter silk-and-suit shops for tourists; a quieter domestic bespoke scene for residents. Prices near Hoi An, selection thinner.

Thailand or Hanoi — where is the suit quality better?

Thailand: mixed market — fused common, canvas exists — The tourist economy is fused package deals; the respected Bangkok houses do genuine canvas at mid prices. Outside Bangkok, quality drops fast. Hanoi: mixed market — fused common, canvas exists — Tourist shops fuse; a small set of domestic bespoke tailors do canvassed work, mostly serving Hanoi professionals.

Where are tailor scams worse, Thailand or Hanoi?

Thailand carries more pressure: Thailand's tailor-tout economy (tuk-tuk commissions, fake closing-down sales, "government export shop" routines) is the most institutionalised in Asia. By contrast, Hanoi: Old Quarter commission steering similar to other tourist zones; calmer than Bangkok.

Can I reorder from Thailand or Hanoi after I fly home?

Thailand: A few Bangkok names handle email reorders well; the rest are unreachable after checkout. Hanoi: Some shops respond on WhatsApp; not systematic. If remote reordering matters, that difference usually decides the whole question — your second and third suits cost no flights.

So which should I choose, Thailand or Hanoi?

On trustworthy construction per dollar, Hanoi scores 41/100. Picking up a decent suit alongside a northern-Vietnam itinerary — fine results, but not the destination in itself. Thailand is the right call when: Convenience tailoring on a beach holiday or layover — good results require booking the Bangkok shortlist and ignoring everything else.
