Are Proper Cloth suits half canvas or full canvas?

Whichever you choose. Proper Cloth lets you pick fully canvassed, half-canvassed or no canvas by named preset (Mercer, Hudson, Allen, Bedford, Waverly) 1, and the price follows: unstructured suit from $645, half-canvassed from $695, fully canvassed from $845 as of September 2026, about $150 for full over half 2. Nothing on Proper Cloth is described as fused; its public framing is canvas or no canvas 1.

What Proper Cloth says

  • Three canvas levels. Fully canvassed: "the canvas extending from the shoulder down to the bottom of the jacket and throughout the lapel. It provides the best drape and the most structure." Half-canvassed: "extends the canvas from the shoulder down to the midsection and throughout the lapel, primarily adding shape to the chest." No canvas: "provides no additional structure to the jacket, and is a popular option for more casual sport coats."1
  • Construction is selected by named preset. Mercer: structured, fully canvassed, medium-weight canvas, shoulder padding, medium sleeve head (business suits). Hudson: soft, fully canvassed, no shoulder padding, lightweight sleeve head. Allen: structured, half-canvassed, the brand's recommendation for a business suit. Bedford: soft, half-canvassed, lightweight canvas, no padding, the go-to for a sport coat. Waverly: no canvas, no padding, no sleeve head.1
  • The construction reference page contains no pricing and never mentions fused or glued construction.1
  • Price by construction: unstructured suit $645; half-canvassed suit $695; half-canvassed tuxedo $730; fully canvassed suit $845. The full-canvas premium over half is about $150, derived from the two published starting prices rather than shown as a configurator upcharge.2
  • Mills named include Vitale Barberis Canonico, Drago and Loro Piana; compositions shown include 100% merino and wool/elastane stretch blends; Super designations seen include Super 150s and S130s.2
  • Fit: "Precision cut and finished by hand" using Smart Sizes, "a custom fit algorithm that adjusts over 20 dimensions in tenth-inch increments."2

How to tell in the store (and what the pinch test cannot prove)

  • The standard instruction: pinch the sleeve first for a baseline, because sleeves are never canvassed, then pinch the cloth below the lowest buttonhole and pull the layers apart. Three layers means a canvas is floating inside; two layers means fused.45
  • The catch most brand pages leave out: on a half-canvassed jacket the front below the second button is fused anyway, so a low pinch on a half-canvas jacket feels exactly like a fused one. The definitive statement of this is a 2012 Put This On piece; no newer primary write-up of the limitation was found, and current how-to pages repeat the test without the caveat.3
  • Every jacket, fused, half-canvas or full-canvas, has a floating chest piece, so feeling a distinct layer at the chest proves nothing.3
  • Net result: a low pinch that finds a floating third layer proves full canvas; a low pinch that finds nothing means fused or half-canvas, and the test cannot separate those two. Salespeople who can make the call are, in the same source's words, "very, very hard to find". The only reliable route is the brand's own published statement, which is why this page separates what the brand says from what buyers report.34
  • Hand-feel is weaker evidence than it used to be: fusing "has gotten a lot better nowadays and is not always as stiff", which makes construction harder to judge by touch.5
  • Working sleeve buttons are not a construction signal. They now appear from Savile Row down to budget high-street retailers, and once the buttonholes are cut, sleeve-length alterations get harder.6

Being a short and stocky person, I could never truly get clothing that fitted properly. "Off the rack" was never an option... As I opened the small box, I got nervous and wondered if I made a big mistake and basically gambled away a fair amount of money. I ordered a 3 piece suit, 2 shirts and had a pair of leather dress shoes. Everything fitted nicely... the shirts were absolutely PERFECT.

Exceptional experience from start to finish. I ordered a fully custom two-piece double-breasted suit remotely from France, Linda and Jennifer guided me through every step with patience and professionalism. The suit arrived in under 3 weeks and the result is flawless: fabric, cut, lining, silhouette, everything is perfect. Nathan Tailors delivered exactly the vision I had in mind. I will absolutely be ordering again. Highly recommended.

This was my first time buying suits online so I was a bit apprehensive. However, the online order form was both easy to use and very thorough, and they did a video call with me to make sure of a couple of measurements that were out of the normal range. Two suits and a shirt arrived here in New Zealand in less than two weeks, are well-made, and fit perfectly. I'm thrilled with the service.
