Do Brooks Brothers suits run small or large?

What Brooks Brothers publishes
- The size guide is organised fit first, chart second. Three suit fits are named: "Milano – Our Slimmest Fit", "Regent – Tailored Classic", "Madison – The Original".1
- The differentials are published in inches and centimetres against Regent as the baseline: "Milano Slim | -1 1/2 in | -1 in" and "Madison Relaxed | +3 in | +5 in" (chest | waist), given in metric as "-4 cm | -3 cm" and "+8 cm | +13 cm".2
- Read practically: the same number on the label is 4.5 inches of chest and 6 inches of waist apart between Milano and Madison. "Runs small" at Brooks Brothers is a fit-name question, never a brand question.12
- The chart itself gives alpha size (XS–XXL), numeric size 34–56, neck, chest and waist, in an inches table and a centimetres table.3
- Two real gaps, and they are the finding: sleeve length is not on the tailored-clothing chart at all, and the guide never states whether its figures are body or garment measurements. If you are between fits
- Because the differentials are published and the absolute numbers are not, the usable move is lateral: if a Regent 42 is tight in the chest, the same 42 in Madison gives you 3 more inches, and Milano takes 1.5 away.2
- The waist moves further than the chest in both directions — Milano is -1" at the waist against -1.5" at the chest, Madison +5" against +3". Madison is a relaxed waist far more than it is a bigger chest.2

What is the difference between Milano, Regent and Madison?
Published inches on the same label: Milano is 1.5" narrower in the chest and 1" narrower in the waist than Regent; Madison is 3" wider in the chest and 5" wider in the waist 2. That is 4.5" of chest across the range 12.
Does Brooks Brothers run small?
The brand does not answer that, and the fit differentials show why it cannot be answered brand-wide — one label number covers 4.5 inches of chest depending on the fit you chose 12.
