What Banana Republic says
- No product page checked states jacket construction. Details on the Signature Italian Rustico, Signature Italian Hopsack and Standard Italian Wool suit jackets cover fit, lapel, pockets, vent, lining composition and mill, never canvas or fusible.123
- Signature Italian Rustico Suit Jacket: "Fabric from Italy's Vitale Barberis Canonico"; shell "100% Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) wool"; "Italian-style soft shoulder expression"; "fully lined"; single back vent; $450.1
- No Super number is published; the brand names the mill but not the yarn count.1
- Signature Italian Hopsack Suit Jacket: $400 full price, seen at $274.99 marked down.2
What buyers and reviewers report
- Dappered, reviewing the Italian Wool Signature suits on 2026-07-07: the brand is "pretty coy about whether they're half-canvas or not"; the jackets "move and drape really well" and are not stiff "like many fully fused jackets can feel."4
- Signature-tier mills per that review: Lanificio Angelico (navy houndstooth) or Vitale Barberis Canonico (gray and blue); jacket plus trouser separates $680 full price, $476 at 30% off.4
How to tell in the store (and what the pinch test cannot prove)
- The standard instruction: pinch the sleeve first for a baseline, because sleeves are never canvassed, then pinch the cloth below the lowest buttonhole and pull the layers apart. Three layers means a canvas is floating inside; two layers means fused.67
- The catch most brand pages leave out: on a half-canvassed jacket the front below the second button is fused anyway, so a low pinch on a half-canvas jacket feels exactly like a fused one. The definitive statement of this is a 2012 Put This On piece; no newer primary write-up of the limitation was found, and current how-to pages repeat the test without the caveat.5
- Every jacket, fused, half-canvas or full-canvas, has a floating chest piece, so feeling a distinct layer at the chest proves nothing.5
- Net result: a low pinch that finds a floating third layer proves full canvas; a low pinch that finds nothing means fused or half-canvas, and the test cannot separate those two. Salespeople who can make the call are, in the same source's words, "very, very hard to find". The only reliable route is the brand's own published statement, which is why this page separates what the brand says from what buyers report.56
- Hand-feel is weaker evidence than it used to be: fusing "has gotten a lot better nowadays and is not always as stiff", which makes construction harder to judge by touch.7
- Working sleeve buttons are not a construction signal. They now appear from Savile Row down to budget high-street retailers, and once the buttonholes are cut, sleeve-length alterations get harder.8
- The Dappered reviewer's own tells for the Banana Republic Signature suits, in the absence of a canvas statement: under-collar felt, taped interior seams, button and lining quality, and the split waistband on the trouser.4
“Ordered two suits and four shirts, remotely from the US. They fit great and are great quality! Was able to do everything over WhatsApp for measurements, etc. Will definitely visit if I ever make it to Hoi An. Highly recommend!”
“Being a short and stocky person, I could never truly get clothing that fitted properly. "Off the rack" was never an option... As I opened the small box, I got nervous and wondered if I made a big mistake and basically gambled away a fair amount of money. I ordered a 3 piece suit, 2 shirts and had a pair of leather dress shoes. Everything fitted nicely... the shirts were absolutely PERFECT.”
“Very satisfied; incredibly skillful to make clothes fit so perfectly. Beautiful fabric exactly as promised, very neat — would simply love to order from here again!”
“They did such an amazing job, my suit fits perfectly and the craftsmanship is superb! Linda was a great help and she knows exactly what she is doing. I can't recommend this place enough and I will be getting more suits from them in the future guaranteed!”
“Great place to get perfect suit, they send me to Poland with no problems.”
“WOW! Ordered a suit online with Linda. She contacted me by video call to go through the measuring process and once confirmed measurements again, around 4 weeks later a made to measure suit arrived in the UK. Fitted perfectly and I didn't even visit! Fantastic quality and customer service from Linda. Would definitely recommend!”
“Exceptional experience from start to finish. I ordered a fully custom two-piece double-breasted suit remotely from France, Linda and Jennifer guided me through every step with patience and professionalism. The suit arrived in under 3 weeks and the result is flawless: fabric, cut, lining, silhouette, everything is perfect. Nathan Tailors delivered exactly the vision I had in mind. I will absolutely be ordering again. Highly recommended.”
“This was my first time buying suits online so I was a bit apprehensive. However, the online order form was both easy to use and very thorough, and they did a video call with me to make sure of a couple of measurements that were out of the normal range. Two suits and a shirt arrived here in New Zealand in less than two weeks, are well-made, and fit perfectly. I'm thrilled with the service.”
