How to tell in the store (and what the pinch test cannot prove)
- The standard instruction: pinch the sleeve first for a baseline, because sleeves are never canvassed, then pinch the cloth below the lowest buttonhole and pull the layers apart. Three layers means a canvas is floating inside; two layers means fused.67
- The catch most brand pages leave out: on a half-canvassed jacket the front below the second button is fused anyway, so a low pinch on a half-canvas jacket feels exactly like a fused one. The definitive statement of this is a 2012 Put This On piece; no newer primary write-up of the limitation was found, and current how-to pages repeat the test without the caveat.5
- Every jacket, fused, half-canvas or full-canvas, has a floating chest piece, so feeling a distinct layer at the chest proves nothing.5
