How to Measure Wrist Size:
For Shirts, Watches, and Bracelets

Wrist size is the smallest custom measurement on a tailoring form — and one of the easiest to get wrong, because there are three different points on the wrist that all give different numbers.

What Is Wrist Measurement?

Your wrist measurement is the circumference around your wrist at the wrist bone (styloid process). For tailoring, this is taken at the same point a watch would sit — just below the wrist bone, on the forearm side.

Wrist size determines the diameter of a fitted shirt cuff. A barrel cuff with one button, a barrel cuff with two buttons, and a French cuff (double cuff) all use the same wrist measurement but with different ease allowances built into the pattern.

Wrist is the most-rounded measurement on the body — there are subtle differences depending on whether you measure at the wrist bone, just above, or just below. Tailors standardize on the wrist bone position.

Why This Measurement Matters

  • âś“Shirt cuff fit — wrong wrist measurement causes cuffs that ride up the forearm or slide over the hand
  • âś“Watch sizing — strap and bracelet length is calculated directly from wrist circumference
  • âś“Asymmetry handling — left and right wrists differ by 0.5-1 cm; bespoke shirts cut each cuff separately
  • âś“Functional comfort — a too-tight cuff cuts circulation; a too-loose one looks sloppy and traps the cuff in the jacket sleeve

Step-by-Step: How to Measure Wrist Size

What You'll Need:

  • Soft fabric measuring tape
  • A flat surface to rest your arm
1

Rest your arm on a flat surface

Place your arm flat on a table, palm up. The wrist should be in a neutral position — not bent, not tensed.

2

Find the wrist bone

Locate the prominent bony bump on the outside (thumb side, technically the radial styloid) of your wrist. This is where a watch face sits. Place the zero end of the measuring tape just below this point — about 1 cm down the forearm.

3

Wrap the tape around

Wrap the tape around the wrist at this point. Keep the tape flat against the skin without compressing — you should be able to slip a finger comfortably under the tape.

4

Read the measurement

Read where the zero end meets the rest of the tape. Record to the nearest 0.5 cm or 0.25 inch.

5

Repeat on the other wrist

Asymmetry of 0.5-1 cm is common. Record both numbers if ordering bespoke shirts; either is acceptable for off-the-rack or watch sizing.

Common Mistakes

❌

Measuring above the wrist bone

The forearm narrows toward the wrist; measuring 1-2 cm above the wrist bone gives a 0.5-1 cm larger reading. Always at the wrist bone, where a watch sits.

❌

Pulling the tape tight

A compressed wrist measurement produces shirt cuffs that cut off circulation when the arm is bent. The tape should slide one finger comfortably under it.

❌

Measuring with the wrist bent

A bent wrist artificially expands the measurement. Keep the arm flat on a table, wrist neutral.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the average wrist size for a man?+

The US adult male average wrist circumference is approximately 7.25 inches (18.4 cm), measured at the wrist bone. The interquartile range runs from 6.75 to 7.5 inches (17.1-19 cm). Most off-the-rack shirt cuffs are sized for this range.

How is wrist size used for watch sizing?+

Watch strap and bracelet length is calculated as wrist circumference plus 0.5-1 cm of ease. A 7.5-inch wrist needs an 8-inch strap for comfortable wear. Watch case diameter (different from strap length) is chosen by aesthetics, but most guidelines suggest case diameter not exceeding wrist width.

What is the difference between barrel cuff and French cuff sizing?+

Both use the same wrist measurement, but with different ease. A barrel cuff (one or two buttons) typically adds 1.5-2 cm of ease over the wrist measurement. A French cuff (double cuff, used with cufflinks) adds 2.5-3 cm to allow the folded fabric to sit properly. A bespoke shirt-maker cuts each style with the appropriate built-in ease.

Why do my shirt cuffs slide over my hand?+

Two possibilities. Either your wrist is smaller than the brand's graded cuff for your sleeve length, or the cuff has too much ease for your bone structure. Solution: order custom or have a tailor take in the cuff to a tighter circumference (a $20-40 alteration).

How tight should a shirt cuff be?+

A properly-fitted shirt cuff should sit at the base of the hand without sliding over the wrist bone, and should allow you to slip one finger comfortably under it. Too tight: cuts circulation when arm is bent. Too loose: rides up under the jacket sleeve and looks sloppy.

Does wrist size change with weight or age?+

Minimally. Wrist circumference is largely bone-based and remains stable across most adult weight changes. Aging can add 0.5 cm of soft tissue around the wrist, but this is rare. If your wrist measurement changes by more than 0.5 cm in a year, consider whether retained fluid or another factor is at play.
